Substance use disorders (SUD) are pervasive, affecting individuals and families everywhere. It can be extremely difficult for people to access comprehensive SUD treatment. Women, particularly those with children, face additional barriers, such as limited childcare options, transportation issues, and the fear of losing their children. These barriers prevent many from seeking the help they desperately need, perpetuating a cycle of addiction and its associated social, economic, and health consequences. The new treatment unit will help to remove barriers for women and families to begin a life in recovery. 

Women with SUD require gender–responsive care that addresses their specific physical, psychological, and social needs. This includes trauma–informed approaches that consider the high prevalence of abuse and trauma histories among women with SUD. This dedicated residential unit will provide a safe and supportive environment where women can receive holistic care tailored to their unique circumstances, fostering better treatment outcomes. 

Children of mothers with SUD are at a heightened risk of experiencing neglect, developmental delays, and emotional trauma. By offering a residential treatment option that accommodates children, we can ensure that families remain together, promoting bonding and providing children with stability during a critical period in their development. This unit will also offer parenting support and education, breaking the cycle of addiction and fostering healthier family dynamics. 

Establishing a women and children’s substance use disorder residential treatment unit in western Wisconsin is not merely an option but a necessity. It represents a critical investment in the health and well–being of women, children, and the broader community, offering hope and support to those in need. This unit will provide a lifeline to families struggling with addiction, fostering resilience, recovery, and a brighter future for generations to come!
