…and yet there is still a stigma where we don’t like to admit that we see a therapist.
Should it be weird to see a therapist?
Part of the reason that people can feel embarrassed is because it makes them wonder , “is there something wrong with me? Shouldn’t I be able to help myself?”. The lingering stigma around mental health makes our culture believe that it’s weird to see a mental health therapist and it must mean that you’re unstable.
Unfortunately, such negative connotations keep people from getting the routine mental and emotional health services that keep life from getting out of control.
A friend of Arbor Place recently saw a therapist for the first time and said, “everyone should have a therapist, I don’t know why I waited so long to go and talk to someone!”
Life is hard. It’s normal to need help
We all widely recognize that it’s normal to go to the doctor for a physical or to have a health condition that requires a medical professional’s input. In the same way it’s normal to need help working through mental and emotional challenges. Most of the time, a professional can help you identify negative patterns in self talk and help you process the highs and lows of emotion that we all experience in life.
The biggest problems happen when someone needs help but doesn’t see a professional soon enough. Getting professional help can minimize the potential of future issues and help you maintain strong mental and emotional health.
